Guitar and flute duo perform Sept. 14

BOONE—The internationally acclaimed guitar and flute duo of Leo Welch and Eva Amsler will present a free recital Sept. 14 at Appalachian State University. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

“How to Make Biodiesel” workshop scheduled for Sept. 22

BOONE – The Boone Sustainable Transportation Club at Appalachian State University will host a workshop on “How to Make Biodiesel” Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to early afternoon.
The workshop will be held at the university’s bio-diesel facility on Dale Street off State Farm Road.

Fall Open House to be held Sept. 15

BOONE – Appalachian State University’s annual Fall Open House for prospective students and their families will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, in Holmes Convocation Center.
The event begins at 9 a.m. with a family assembly, followed by an information fair from 9:30 to noon.

Mayfield to coordinate Appalachian’s new general education program

BOONE—Dr. Mike Mayfield has been named the faculty coordinator of the new general education program at Appalachian State University, announced Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Stan Aeschleman. Mayfield is a professor in Appalachian’s Department of Geography and Planning.

BOONE—Each summer, rising high school seniors in the Upward Bound program at Appalachian State University participate in the Senior Adventure Group Experience (SAGE), which includes a week-long backpacking trip, a week visiting colleges across the state, two weeks of SAT preparation, a week-long trip to Washington D.C., and a week-long trip to the coast.

Appalachian professor participates in U.S.-China forum on at-risk youth

BOONE—China is experiencing a rise in youth violence, related in part to the country’s growing economy, according to Daniel Leitch, an assistant professor in Appalachian State University’s Reich College of Education. Leitch recently participated in a U.S.-China forum on at-risk youth held in Beijing.
