State Superintendent of Public Instruction to deliver Appalachian’s commencement address

BOONE— N.C. State Superintendent of Public Instruction June St. Clair Atkinson will be guest speaker at the Dec. 16 commencement at Appalachian State University.
More than 800 undergraduate students and 240 graduate students have applied for graduation.

Appalachian’s Brass Ensembles perform Nov. 26

BOONE—A concert featuring students in various brass ensembles at Appalachian State University will be held Nov. 26 in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall.

Appalachian announces 2008 Summer Reading program selection

BOONE—“The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls has been selected for the 2008 Summer Reading Program at Appalachian State University, announced Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock.

Hayes School of Music Holiday Concert Held Nov. 30

BOONE—The Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will usher in the holiday season Nov. 30 with its annual holiday scholarship concert.
The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is $5. Tickets are available from the Farthing Auditorium Box Office weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Graham and Smith appointed to new positions at Appalachian

BOONE—Geoff Graham of Boone has been named director of development for Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University. Geraldine “Gerry” Smith of Boone and Charlotte has been named an advancement specialist for the college.

BOONE—Math professor Sarah J. Greenwald has an interesting connection to an animated science fiction cartoon being released Nov. 27 on DVD.
“Futurama: Bender’s Big Score” includes a 25-minute math lecture by Greenwald as one of its added features.

Veterans of military service were honored during a special ceremony at Appalachian State University on Monday, Nov. 12. Appalachian State University senior Brian Stokes, who spent five years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including two tours of duty in Iraq, was guest speaker.
