Honors Brass Quintet performs Jan. 22

BOONE—The Honors Brass Quintet from the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will perform Jan. 22.
The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Appalachian restricts smoking on campus

BOONE—Smoking is now prohibited in and within 50 feet of all Appalachian State University facilities.
North Carolina law (NCGS143-597) enacted July 1, 2007 allows universities to regulate smoking at properties owned or leased by a state university.

Faculty recital series features songs from around the world Feb. 5

BOONE—Mezzo soprano Priscilla Porterfield will be joined by faculty guests during the Faculty Recital Series program “Global Expressions” presented by Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music.
The performance begins Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

Snow day fun Appalachian style

Students at Appalachian State University had a short reprieve from classes Thursday when three to five inches of snow fell in the area. Early morning classes were cancelled, giving these students a chance to sled next to I.G. Greer Hall and build an 11-foot-tall snowman on Sanford Mall. (Photos by Troy Tuttle)

Feminist activist Gloria Steinem speaks Feb. 4 at Appalachian

BOONE—Writer, lecturer, editor and feminist activist Gloria Steinem will speak at Appalachian State University Monday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium.
The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the University Forum Committee, administered by Appalachian’s University College.

N.C. Center for Engineering Technologies in Hickory offers first classes

BOONE—An evening of Russian music for viola and piano will be presented Jan. 17 at Appalachian State University.
The 8 p.m. performance will be held in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The recital violist Eric Koontz and pianist Bair Shagdaron are both members of the Hayes School of Music faculty.

Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III to speak at MLK Commemoration Ceremony

BOONE—Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, is the keynote speaker for the 24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration at Appalachian State University. The program Jan. 23 begins at 7 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium. Admission is free.

Region’s economy shows slight gain for November, but overall weakness remains

BOONE—Employment in Western North Carolina remained below historic figures at the end of the year, with fewer existing jobs than were recorded six months ago, and despite positive growth in November 2007, the economic outlook for 2008 remains weak, according to Todd Cherry, co-author of the Western North Carolina Economic Index and Report.

Appalachian included in Kiplinger’s list of best value public universities

BOONE—Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has ranked Appalachian State University No. 27 in its list of 100 best values in public universities for in-state students.
The list is composed of schools with “outstanding academic quality plus an affordable price tag.” Data from 500 public four-year colleges and universities were considered in the rankings.
