Percussion ensembles perform March 30 at Appalachian

BOONE— Percussion ensembles from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will perform March 30 during the school’s World Percussion Series. The concert begins at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
Performing are the African Ensemble, Steely Pan Steel Band®, Tabla Ensemble and Mid-East Ensemble.

BOONE—The book “Sam Ervin: Last of the Founding Fathers” has received the North Caroliniana Book Award for 2007. The award will be presented May 29 in Greensboro during a meeting of the North Caroliniana Society.

Adams named chair of Appalachian’s Department of Theatre and Dance

BOONE—Marianne Adams has been named chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Appalachian State University, effective July 1. Adams has served as interim chair since July 1, 2007. She is a professor and coordinator of the dance program in the department.

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s enrollment guide for newly accepted freshmen and transfer students called First Connections was a Grand Award winner at the 2008 District III meeting of CASE, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.The guide was recognized in CASE’s student recruitment-printed publications category for its content, design and overall effectiveness.

Wheeler named director of Appalachian’s Prestigious Scholars Program

BOONE— Dale E. Wheeler, an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University, has been named director of the university’s Prestigious Scholars Program. He also will serve as a member of the university’s Heltzer Honors Program staff.

Stutts named chair of Appalachian’s Department of Nursing

BOONE—Dr. Wanda Stutts of Mooresville has been named chair of the Department of Nursing at Appalachian State University. She had served as interim chair of the department since May 2007. She also is an associate professor in the department.

Appalachian’s campus radio studio named for Boone businessman

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees have approved naming the WASU-FM radio broadcast studio for alumnus Wayne Sumner of Boone.
The Wayne L. Sumner Radio Studio will be located on the first floor of the Department of Communication’s George G. Beasley Broadcasting Complex, projected to open in 2010 at the corner of Rivers and Depot streets.

Musical duo of David Gee and Lynn Mackey perform at Appalachian

Alexandra Hellenbrand named global studies director at Appalachian

BOONE—Dr. Alexandra Hellenbrand, who will be ending a five-year term as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures this semester, has been named the director of Appalachian State University’s global studies program, beginning fall 2008.
