Musicians present concert Oct. 11 to benefit Appalachian’s annual guitar festival

BOONE—Musicians from Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music and others will present a concert Sunday, Oct. 11, to benefit the annual Appalachian GuitarFest.
The program begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. The suggested donation is $5 per person.

BOONE—Jeannine Underdown Collins of Boone and G.A. Sywassink of Hilton Head Island, S.C., began terms as officers on Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees Sept. 25.
Underdown Collins is chair of the board and Sywassink is vice chair. Hughlene Bostian Frank of Greensboro is secretary of the board.

BOONE—Beginning Oct. 1, it will be illegal to dispose of plastic bottles in a landfill. They must be recycled instead.
North Carolina is one of the first states to ban plastic bottle waste. Landfills that fail to recycle the bottles are subject to a $15,000 fine.

Appalachian to spend $5.34 million on energy-saving measures

BOONE—Appalachian State University’s Board of Trustees today approved a plan to borrow $5.34 million to implement a variety of energy-saving measures across campus. The measures are expected to save at least $600,000 a year in energy costs. Those savings will be used to repay the loan within 12 years or less.
