BOONE—The 3rd Annual Tom Moore 5K Run/Walk will take place April 19 at the Boone Greenway. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the event begins at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20. In addition, a one-mile fun run for children 12 and under will begin at 8:45 a.m. Registration is $1.

BOONE—Western North Carolina’s economy grew 0.5 percent in February, despite a lack of accompanying job growth. According to data in the Western North Carolina Economic Index compiled at Appalachian State University, the economy grew for two consecutive months – the first time back-to-back growth has occurred since 2007 – but job growth remains flat.

Mary Grace Loftin has received Appalachian State University’s Student Employee of the Year Scholarship, which is presented annually by the Office of Student Development. Loftin will receive a $1,000 scholarship for 2008-09 academic year.
